By the time the Magic of Everything comic’s and book series’ events take place, 20 years have past.
The comic will be a floating timeline and thus, it will always be 20 years ahead from our current moment.
The first couple book series will be vague about the exact year the Magic of Everything first came into being. Whatever point the reader thinks that is, the story will start 20 years after.
It is also the age of the main protagonist in the first book in the Free Matter series. As she represents a generation who have only lived in Magic of Everything.
I settled on this number of years on being the right point to begin based, to a good degree, on two influences. One historical the other hypothetical.
Seeing how quick Japanese society and government changed after the ravages of World War ll was something that was not lost on me. Before the war, Japan was totalitarian, ultra-nationalistic, and fascist. After the war, the government transformed into a democracy. With its society becoming receptive to Western influences. Influences they fused with their own creating cultural and commercial commodities. In 20 years many of these
Through 20 years all these things had occurred to a large degree. Of course, beyond this time even greater strides have been.
The technological singularity, being the hypothetical influence, has awesome potential. My conception of which is based on the following definition by Ray Kurzweil:
“… a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life will be irreversibly transformed. Although neither utopian nor dystopian, this epoch will transform the concepts that we rely on to give meaning to our lives, from our business models to the cycle of human life, including death itself.”
That such an event could change the world so much so fast was something I wanted to explore. But based on something beyond science yet still a form of technology. Magic was this thing. At least my interpretation of it.
The Magic of Everything brings about an amazing leap in capability for inhabitants of Earth. So I think 20 years is sufficient enough time for its effects to be realized to a great degree. Especially, when those effects are used to garner insight and perspective on our own reality.
